UK lock-down January 2021

Following the announcement of a third National lockdown in England from 5 January, Oliver Dowden - the Secretary of State for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport - has once again confirmed the exemption for film & TV production meaning that Covid-secure filming can continue:

National Restrictions in England from 5 January - COVID-secure Film & TV Production Continues

Following the Prime Minister's announcement of further national restrictions to operate throughout England from January 5th, the Secretary of State for DCMS has confirmed that whilst you should work from home unless you cannot, exemptions are in place for the creative sector which includes film & TV production. Additionally, filming can continue to take place in the premises of businesses that are closed as set out on page 20 of the published Government Guidance .

Therefore, both the British Film Commission and Creative England have advised that Covid-secure film and TV production operating under the British Film Comission guidelines can continue in England under the new restrictions thanks to the extremely rigorous and comprehensive Covid safety protocols prepared by the BFC (view here).

The restrictions do allow specific exceptions "for work purposes, where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home (including if your job involves working in other people's homes)".

See this page on the gov.uk web site, which specifically states that: "... any closed premises can open for the purposes of ...

  • making a film, television programme, audio programme or audio-visual advertisement."

The British Film Commission (BFC) has assured us that "COVID-secure film and TV production can continue in England under the new restrictions. The key is that they are Covid Secure under the BFC guidelines" (the guidelines may be seen here).

Please also see Film London Guidance.

The BFC guidelines were first drawn up in June 2020 in consultation with, amongst others, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, Public Health England and the Health and Safety Executive.

The guidance lays down strict procedures to be followed with regard to Cleanliness, Sanitisation and Inspection.

As a location agency, we can provide assurances to both our clients and location owners that we will make our very best efforts to ensure that productions are conducted in a safe and secure environment. We expect and require each production to have a designated and suitably trained COVID supervisor who will maintain overall responsibility for the safe running of the shoot.

The UK film & television industry is open for business, and Location Works is open for business - we are able to provide our full range of location services as usual, plus we can advise about cleaning and other COVID procedures.

Please do keep in touch, and please ask us for advice if you are unsure.... stay safe.
