pillar < pilaster  |  porch >

A pillar is a vertical support structure.

To be accurate: a 'column' is any of such structures, whereas a 'pillar' is a column that is not circular in cross-section. A 'pier' is a large column supporting a lot of weight, as might be found at the base, or in the basement, of a building.
